Although it is able to take on other tasks as well, the Revo's primary role is as an organiser. To increase accessibility
to this function, as well as present various system information, Axel Vorbauer
has
written SwitchOn, a program to show this to you when you turn on your Psion. I reviewed version 1.91.
Three views are available in SwitchOn - an Agenda view, a system information window and a nightclock. The last view, the
nightclock, is fairly pointless as the Revo has no backlight. However, it may be useful if you have a light on at night,
as it can be scheduled to appear only between certain times.
The Agenda view is probably the most useful. It scans your agenda and displays the items in it in certain categories and
for a customisable distance into the future. It can be scrolled around using the keyboard or pen, as well as zoomed in
(although this takes a few seconds when it re-scans the agenda each time). The main fault with this is that it will not
work if the agenda file is open in the Today view of the Revo's system screen - if the file is open in the main Agenda
program it has no problem, though.
The system information window is also available. This shows the free system memory, the battery status, the contrast and
whether the sound and external link are on or off. Tapping on the memory icon brings up the Open Files/Programs dialogue,
the battery status tells you a perculiar figure about how long the main battery is in use for which appears to bear no
relation to actual use and when it was 'changed' (charged), the contrast can be altered by tapping on a tiny plus or
minus sign and tapping on the sound or external link icons changes their status. Strangely, tapping the Revo text in
the top right-hand corner changes the 'backlight' status, despite the fact that the Revo does't have one.
One other unusual problem is that the battery status always showed empty on my Revo until I manually altered the
configuration of volts and warnings, and I had to guess these. Maybe the program could set this automatically?
Another of the program's many functions is to play a sound when you turn on, and to play a warning noise when external
power is lost. The former could range from fun to annoying depending on the sound and where you are (it can always be
turned off), and the latter could be useful if you tend to lose external power often.
A feature which could be very useful to some Revo users is to switch on the cable link with external power and to turn it
off when power is lost. This could be used to automatically enable and disable the link when you respectively dock and
undock the Revo.
By default, SwitchOn always comes to the front for a user-defined number of seconds when you turn on the machine, taking
up to two presses of Esc to close the views - conveniently, the same as the On button. It is questionable how often you
would want the program to appear, though - once per day might be enough, depending on how often you need to see your
agenda.
The help file is generally okay, and a Quickhelp function for seeing what various functions do is available as well.
There are a few typos (such as 'Free' as 'Fee') and odd English (what is a 'sounddrivever'?), but as it has been written
by a German developer this is forgivable really.
Most useful for its Agenda at a glance view, SwitchOn is a good idea and may be very helpful to some users. It could do
with a little neatening up, though - new versions are coming out often, so we may see some fixes in another release soon.
