Full control is, more or less, possible from the keyboard, although it is a lot
easier to navigate on-screen with the supplied stylus pen (or even a finger,
provided that you don't grease up the screen with it!). The stylus itself is a
little flimsy, and so I tend to use a more solid 3-in-1 pen, pencil and stylus,
available from
Widget Software
. For some reason, I keep trying to put the
stylus in upside down (one side is grooved whilst the other is smooth).
The screen has a slightly smaller screen resolution than its 'big brother',
the Series 5mx (and has no backlight, no matter what the manual may say,
although it does have a special 3M reflective back and is extremely sharp)
and supports 16-colour images like the 5mx, but will not accept Compact Flash
cards. This means that you only have the Revo's 8MB of internal RAM to store
programs and files in. As often said, though, the Revo is not a solution for
the power user, as you can't expect to include all the functionality of a
larger machine into a smaller one which is also cheaper. This 8MB will,
however, store about 4,000 pages of text - more than enough to replace a
paper organiser or databank!
By this time, you're probably interested in the software that comes with the
Revo. It uses
Symbian's
EPOC Release 5 32-bit operating system, which is
designed for portable computers and is also used in the Series 5mx and
Series 7. This is pretty fast and user-friendly, and supports many
freeware, shareware and commercial software packages, which are readily
available (see Frevo's software list for many
freeware downloads). Not all Series 5mx software works, due to the smaller
screen resolution, but a lot will either be compatible now or soon.
The Revo's applications, as standard, are (click titles or features to see
screenshots)
Contacts, a database of contact
details (this can also dial a number for you, by reproducing DTMF phone
signals through the Revo's small but loud speaker),
Agenda, the multi-view
time manager,
Email, the email and SMS mobile
phone message manager, Phone,
the mobile phone synchronisation tool,
Time, the alarm and world map,
Calc,
the desk roll and
scientific calculator,
Jotter, the quick note taker,
Data,
the database,
Word, the word processor,
Sheet, the spreadsheet and
graph creator,
eSetup,
the Internet setup wizard and
Cascade, the puzzle game.
Series 5mx users will notice that Record is missing, as the Revo has no
dictaphone functionality, as are Program, Comms, Fax and Sketch the drawing
app (a disappointing omission for a touch-screen device). Web, the simple
Web browser, and Spell, the
spell checker,
thesaurus, crossword and anagram
solver, can be downloaded from the PsiWin 2.3 CD, although they will take up
quite a bit of the RAM. One additional feature on the Revo that other Psion
users would probably appreciate is the Today view on the System screen, which
displays appointments and to-dos for today, as well as the battery, link and
disk space status. Everything works very well, although for some reason I
couldn't get Phone to connect to a mobile phone by infrared - this could be
a problem with the phone I was using, though.
