After getting my Revo, one of the first third-party applications I installed
was J D Medhurst's QuickNote
program. I've always thought that not including
the Series 5mx drawing app Sketch was a missed opportunity, the Revo being a
touch-screen device. QuickNote fills in at least part of this functionality.
QuickNote is a fairly small program, using up about 70kb of space with
several drawings saved, and is also quite simple. Most of the screen is
simply a space which accepts drawings from the stylus, or typing (text
entered can be dragged around the screen before being drawn on). The toolbar,
which is hideable, provides buttons for moving between pages, of which you
can have a theoretically unlimited number - it's only limited by your disk
space. Also on the toolbar are buttons to clear the current page, insert
pages, change between drawing and erasing and swap the tool thickness. The
app can also timestamp pages, and if enabled will come to the front whenever
you open your Revo.
I've found QuickNote handy for everything from playing paper games like
Noughts and Crosses to drawing diagrams and sketches - by nature, it's
very versatile. However, its main weakness becomes obvious if you try to
copy your notes to the PC, or vice-versa. Basically, it's impossible to
copy from the PC to QuickNote, and particularly fiddly to copy on to the
PC (involving taking screenshots and DOS file converters).
This isn't entirely negative, though, as strictly QuickNote is not meant to
be an image manipulation tool - it's for taking notes on the move, and puts
a vast amount of 'paper' in your pocket. Besides, it's free, and you really
can't argue with that!
