Since this review, Converti has been updated to show 24 units per screen on the Revo,
as the screenshot above shows.
A Personal Digital Assistant like the Revo is designed to be taken everywhere, so it's a perfect
platform for unit conversion tools - and there are plenty available for the Series 5/5mx, but at
the time of writing Guillaume Dupont's
Converti
is the only freeware tool I know of which has come over to the Revo.
When Converti starts it displays a splash screen for a few seconds, and then takes a few seconds
longer to load all of the conversion units. The splash screen also appears often when you switch
to Converti, which I wish it wouldn't do - it can be cancelled early by pressing a key, but
not by tapping the screen (which would make it less of a problem).
Converti comes supplied with several pages of units, in the categories length, weight, area,
speed, volume, time and pressure. When a value is assigned to one of the units in a category,
it is converted into all of that category's other units, which is more convenient than only
converting from one unit into another. Always displayed are degrees Celcius and Fahrenheit
for temperature conversion.
You can add your own categories and units, and each unit has to be relative to just one other
unit, so triangulation must be used by the program to fill in all the conversions for the
other units.
This program is deliberately not an easy option for currency conversion, due to its
inability to update unit conversion rates without deleting and re-creating the units.
It's okay for rough estimates, but for more accurate conversion you'll need to buy
Guillaume's shareware
Monnaie
software.
Converti has a few other nice features - a small numerical pallet is displayed so that
you can convert without using the keyboard (a special Revo-only feature), simple
calculations can be executed in the data entry line and the program can be set up to
copy converted values automatically.
All taken into account, Converti is quite useful to have on your Revo if you are likely
to have to do any conversions (provided they are not involving currency) and, like
all programs reviewed, is free and so can be forgiven many of its downfalls.
