You probably bought your Revo for productivity or organisation reasons, but there's no
harm in playing a game on it occasionally. Provided you're not supposed to be supervising
the donut manufacture line, or whatever it is you do, or we could end up with substandard
donuts!
Asteroids is Neuon's
.
first Revo-compatible freeware game (they also write plenty of other
useful Revo and Series 5/5mx software, although it isn't all free). It is programmed by
Phil Gooch, and based on the classic Atari game. The game is more or less exactly like its
Atari equivalent in terms of game play, aided of course by the conveniences of modern
computers, touch screens and faster processors!
Asteroids displays a splash screen for a few seconds whilst loading the game, although this
can be cancelled more quickly by pressing a key, but not by tapping the screen (which would
be more convenient).
Surely you already know how to play asteroids! You control a small ship flying through an
asteroid belt. Flying by are asteroids, which must be shot at to break them down into
smaller and smaller pieces to avoid collision. You must also avoid and attack UFOs which
may also shoot at you. In addition, it uses normal space physics, ie when you thrust, you
keep moving in that direction until you turn around and reverse in the opposite direction.
Multiple difficulty levels are on offer, as are an inverse video (black on white or white on
black) mode, vector beam (line) width options and an ability to override the game's automatic
processor detection. This means that, although the Revo uses a 'fast' processor, you can set
the game to 'standard' (Series 5/Osaris/Geofox) mode, in which fewer asteroids are shown but
because of this the game is twice as fast! The standard key setup is a little unusual,
although it can be customised.
The display is generally flicker-free, whilst processor intensive, but during 'white on
black' video mode, objects tend to leave a small trail - however, this is not a problem.
Play in general becomes pretty fast and furious, and keys can sometimes feel unresponsive,
so it's best to set your keyboard repeat rate in the Revo's control panel fairly quick when
you play.
Asteroids is a good port of the classic game and great for a quick game. If you enjoy it,
you'll probably keep coming back to it.
