There are a large number of high-quality games available for the Psion's EPOC operating
system. Adder! is FreEPOC's
latest freeware game to be converted to the Revo, by Ewan
Spence, and I've been looking at version 0.51 Beta.
Adder! is the EPOC version of a game which has appeared in many places, including on Nokia
mobile phones and bundled as a free sample program for QBasic, the programming language
which came with Microsoft's MSDOS in its later versions. You play a snake - an adder in
FreEPOC's game - and you must move around the playing field eating numbered blocks without
crashing into yourself or the walls. You become longer with each block, and you must grow
to the right length before you can finish the level.
Unusually for this type of game, Adder! offers two speed levels, so Adder! can be played as
a fast and furious arcade game or a slower-paced game which is more of a puzzler. This is a
useful addition as it accommodates for different people's preferred style of game.
Eight levels are available in this beta, although there should be sixteen in the final
release. These increase in difficulty as they should, and it takes quite a while to get
all the way through the game!
I've tried to find fault with Adder! and, quite frankly, couldn't find anything which won't
be fixed (this is a beta version, after all). Adder! is user-friendly and, as far as I can
see, by the time it comes out of beta should be bug-free.
Adder! is an addictive and playable game which most people will find appealing, and might
well be worth some space in your RAM.
